5th Annual Ginsberg Marathon,
with Eileen Myles!
EILEEN MYLES
was born in Cambridge, Mass. in 1949, was educated in Catholic schools and graduated from U. Mass. (Boston) in 1971. She
moved to New York in 1974, gave her first reading at CBGB's and then gravitated to St. Mark's Church where she studied with
Paul Violi, Alice Notley and Ted Berrigan. She ran the Saint Mark's Poetry Project in 1984-86. She's written two plays, a book
of short stories Chelsea Girls (1994) and several books of poems including Maxfield Parrish (1995) and Skies (2001) on Black
Sparrow Press. Her poetry emanates immediacy, inventiveness, inclusiveness. Her role as a teacher, an editor, and as a candidate
in the 1992 Presidential Election have all demonstrated her unstinting energies. An anarchic spirit appears in her animating presence
and in her subversive re-invention of existing forms.
Thursday, April 4 she'll be in our writer's critique circle, Living Room at SPLAB! at 7PM. Friday, April 5 at Auburn High School, a lecture on Allen Ginsberg's poetry and politics. Saturday, April 6 a workshop at SPLAB! 2-5PM Poetry, Politics and the Movies Since the middle of the last century (and before) American poetry has taken advantage of the way film works to create a life like effect in verse. Allen Ginsberg was one of the first popularizers of the new-old chant structure that also propelled tribal poetry, Christopher Smart's poetry, Gertrude Stein's poetry and if we look at the way we are fed information in the media we see that there's something inherently American in saying something again and again and again until it's sold, or seems "real." In this workshop we'll look at how this repetition works, how it inflects our sense of conviction everyday and how we can push back (or out) and sell some new things. Poetry as always reinvents our freedom of speech, helps us meet "us." Saturday, April 6 at 8PM she reads to kick off the 5th Annual Allen Ginsberg Open Mic Poetry Marathonfeaturing a poetry videoconference link w/ Chicago poets led by Kurt Heintz.and listen for an interview w/ Eileen taped for broadcast on It Plays in Peoria affiliate stations like KING-FM, Sunday night at 12M. Details on the radio show at www.inpeoria.org. Suggested donation, $10-$15 for the Living Room and Marathon, $40 for the workshop. Pay what you can if you are poor or a student. Pay more if you have it. We're a non-profit organization for crying out loud! No one turned away for lack of funds, but space is limited.
