comes to Auburn for a reading and workshop at the SPLAB!
The author of Red Beans, Mainland, Tropilicazation, By Lingual Wholes, Rhythm Content and Flavor and his latest: Panoramas, was featured on Bill Moyers'"Language of Life" series on PBS. Cruz has won numerous awards including the Guggenheim Fellowship and the New York Poetry Foundation Award.
Cruz lives in Puerto Rico. The workshop (11/7 1-4P) features an examination of William Carlos Williams' (WCW) Latino roots via his Puerto Rican Mother and its effect on his poetry and his pivotal role in transforming American Poetics. Williams' sense of "Americanism" continues to be very important in light of the emergence of Latino Literature. We will also touch upon WCW's relationships with the poets Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens, Robert Creeley, Allen Ginsberg and others. The three hour workshop starts at 1pm and is entitled: William Carlos Williams: Bi-Lingualism-Multi-Cultures and U.S. Poetry. Suggested reading: Yes, Mrs. Williams by WCW, The Poems Eve, Adam, Two Pendants for the Ears, The Prologue to Kora in Hell & In the American Grain. Advance reservations are recommended as the SPLAB! is an intimate space. Suggested donation for the reading (8PM) & workshop (1-4PM) is $40.00. Reading only is $10.00.
